Junior League Announces Naming of Carol Jenkins Barnett Sustainer of the Year Award

The Junior League of Greater Lakeland announced the naming of the Carol Jenkins Barnett Sustainer of the Year award during its annual meeting at the Lakeland Country Club on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. More than 100 members were in attendance for the event.

Junior League Sustaining Vice President Alice O’Reilly recognized the late Carol Jenkins Barnett who was a long-time member and past board member for her accomplishments.

The Carol Jenkins Barnett Sustainer of the Year award is given annually to a Junior League of Greater Lakeland sustainer who goes above and beyond to support the League.

“Earlier this year, the League lost Carol Jenkins Barnett, one of only 19 members to be granted Notable Member status by the Association of Junior Leagues International. Fellow Notable Members include Barbara Bush, Katharine Hepburn, Sarah Dukes McKay, and Eleanor Roosevelt, to name a few,” O’Reilly said.

Throughout years of League service, Carol wore many important hats. During her active years, Carol served as Nominating Chairman, Admissions-Provisional Chairman, Special Projects Task Force Chairman, Treasurer and Community Vice President. But one of her most important roles, and certainly one of her favorites, was being what she referred to as “The Mother of Follies” when she reintroduced that highly successful corporate fundraiser to our membership in 1984.

Beyond the League, Carol was honored in many ways for her philanthropic spirit, benefiting Florida Southern C0llege, of which she and Barney are alumni, the city of Lakeland through numerous parks and recreation endeavors, and Lakeland Regional Health, the Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women & Children proudly bearing her name.

For her efforts, Carol has been recognized regionally and nationally. Carol had the honor of being inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame and in 2004, she won the Florida Arts Recognition Award. Additionally, Carol was the recipient of the 2015 Women in Philanthropy award, a national honor bestowed by the United Way Women’s Leadership Council. Locally, the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce honored Carol, a graduate of Leadership Lakeland, with the Jerry Annis Award for service.
