What is the purpose and vision of The Junior League of Greater Lakeland?

For over 90 years, the Junior League of Greater Lakeland (JLGL) has advocated for the betterment of our community through our youth literacy outreach programs and community partnerships.

Every year, our members are offered opportunities to learn, grow and lead. Through the League, we cultivate a love of service and a giving spirit. We boast public officials, teachers of the year, Polk Emerging Leaders, business owners and more. Because of the League, the community receives trained leaders who are poised to contribute and make a difference.

The League’s effort, vision and fortitude can be credited with many of our community’s finest gifts. From the Polk Museum of Art and the Polk Theatre to Achievement Academy and the Learning Resource Center, the Junior League has played a significant role in founding and/or contributing to organizations that continue to make a lasting impression on our community.

With youth literacy as our focus, we have distributed more than one million books to local elementary school students. In the coming years, the League’s goal is to shift its focus to include children and women’s wellness. To make this change in programming and community outreach, we need your help.

PROGRAMMING SUPPORTED BY THE JUNIOR LEAGUE INCLUDES:

  • Host the annual Lakeland Christmas Parade, in collaboration with the City of Lakeland.
  • Grant funding and volunteers provided to local non-profits focused on children & family wellness through our Community Impact Program.
  • Annual World of Reading Festival with more than 1,500 families in attendance.
  • Approximately 10,000 books per year distributed to children from low-income homes through our Reading is Fundamental Program.
  • Ready to Read family nights offered in collaboration with a Title One school focused on encouraging school readiness and family literacy.
  • Community Research and Project Development committee members work with community leaders to identify needs in Lakeland and align Junior League resources to address them.
